What is a Mystery Batt?
It is a blend of various fibers of one or more of the following: Alpaca, Llama, and Wool. Silk, Nylon, Mohair, Mylar, Camel…I just start throwing the fibers onto my drum carder and what happens is a Mystery Batt. I cannot recreate them exactly, as I do not weigh out anything, but I usually make two to three out of the same colors.
The batts weigh a little over an ouce, somewhere between 1.25 and 1.75 ounces or 35 to 50 grams. Some may be more, but never less than 35 grams. I find that if there is a lot of fine wool and luxury fibers the carder doesn’t take as much as if it’s mohair and wool as the main blend. I’ve been making the mystery batt and selling them at a local fiber shop and at spinning get gatherings for over fifteen years now. Plus of course my shop here at the Ranch!
There are a couple of ways to spin them. You can tear off strips to spin, or draft from one end to make a roving that will spin very nicely. |
